About Don
Hi There, I’m Don Lehmann and I’d like to welcome you to my “cabin on the lake,” affectionately known as my website! Retiring in Florida certainly has its advantages, but only one makes all those years spent working truly worth it… Fishing! If you’re reading this than you probably share my passion. Fishing gets into your soul and consumes you in a good way. Bikers’ are known for their famous description of riding a Harley… “If I have to explain, you wouldn’t understand”… Fishing is a lot like that, but everyone started somewhere.
I want this site to entertain the seasoned Fisherman as well as teach the new Fisherman. Fishing is some of the best fun that one will ever have and you’d be hard pressed to find a better bonding experience. I really want you to come back and visit often; there will always be new things to see and some great links to some great products. Read my “LargeMouth” Blog, and share your own thoughts and stories… Heck, let’s just have some fun and make this cabin on the lake one of your favorite retreats!
I turned 71 in late 2007, these, my Golden Years are accented by my one true vice… fishing, and I absolutely love it, but I’ve always enjoyed fishing, even from my early days living in Northwest Indiana. Our whole family would go fishing together, we had a lot of fun together, and we enjoyed the competition too…who would catch the first, the biggest, and the most fish of the day. These are the indelible memories that are usually associated with fishing. If you already fish, Great! If you don’t, let’s get you hooked!
My Dad was the most passionate fisherman in our family and this obviously rubbed off on me. As a young boy, the night before, I would dig out the worms for our bait by inserting an electrified screwdriver into the ground in order to drive the worms to the surface, then right to bed. Dad would always make sure that we were fishing by daybreak. He would check the wind direction before we left, if it was a south to southwest wind, the fishing would be good, if the barometer was reading high, this was also a good sign. Then he would get me up at 4 am…”Rise and Shine Don, the fish are biting, it’s daylight in the swamp”. I’d fly out of bed, get dressed, and we’d head for the “Buffalo Lunch” for breakfast, and continue to the Government Pier in Michigan City, stopping off for minnows before the long walk on to the pier.
We would bait the hooks with minnows or worms, whichever the fish were biting. Our family of four, one day record was 126 perch. We cleaned fish for three hours that night, as my Mom broke out the frying pan! As I saw it, and as I see it, this was “living”, and those wonderful memories will be with me always. I sincerely hope that this website will help you to create new memories and recapture old ones.
With my bride of 47 years, Terry.
